All throughout Horrors Untold‘s development process, culminating in its publication on Halloween day last year, we had a very specific, two-fold mission statement in place that guided every facet of its creation: fashion a never-been-done-before immersive book experience, and provide the most authoritative collection of evergreen Halloween Horrors Nights Orlando information that was available anywhere.
“Evergreen” is a term that, at least in this particular context, could probably use some expounding on. Plenty of websites and other tools are out there in the wider world (web) that offer granular data on that year’s Horror Nights, going over touring plans, ticket options and prices, and the food and merchandise offerings – all extremely useful guidance to have on hand, to be sure, but also extremely ephemeral info, changing every spooky season. What the team and I wanted to exactly hone in on was all the materials that Universal’s Halloween proceedings had slowly but surely built up over its three decades-plus of existence, the content that might be in the past but which allows you to fully understand – and, we thought, more thoroughly enjoy – the experiences that would be currently on hand. This is why our seven HHN chapters are devoted to its lore; history; most influential intellectual properties; its expansion, both within Universal Orlando Resort and around the world; the evolution of its food and merch game; and, of course, a general introduction of the event itself for all those who might be new to the horror program (or a pretty good back-to-basics refresher for all the diehards, which, it turns out, is surprisingly enjoyable in its own right).
But while this historical distillation, fueled by sharp analysis and laced with passionate insight, will forever remain handy, Halloween Horror Nights does, of course, continue to run year in and year out – which means, in turn, that it continues to grow in size, expand in complexity, and evolve in its experiential offerings. (The upcoming Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas, Universal’s first-ever year-round haunt, actually stands testament to all three points, which is precisely why we’ve already started covering it here alongside its Floridian sibling.) All of which is to explain why we on the team have decided to start up the Horrors Untold Blog, offering timely, year-round coverage of an event that has, in more ways than one, become a year-round entity itself; think of it as your Horrors Untold book come to daily life, extending the expert coverage from HHN’s first 32 years to the present.
This, then, forms our new mission statement: this new blog venture will become your traveling companion as you work your way through the dark and winding avenues of Universal’s Halloween celebrations in Orlando and Vegas, helping pick out the path and point out all the interesting, surprising, and delightful sights that dot the landscape along the way. We’ll dissect the news announcements, predict how the current affairs of today will become the lasting legacy of tomorrow, and revel in the anticipation as we continue to count down the days until August 14 and 29 – the opening dates for Horror Unleashed and Halloween Horror Nights Orlando, respectively.
